good afternoon, everybody, i'm larry beil >> for the second time in just over a week a gas leak forced evacuation of skyline high school in oakland today, causing chaos for teachers, students and bus sdpriefrz parents want answers. nick smith is live outside of the high school with more. nick? >> reporter: good afternoon, i have new information i just got off the phone with the spokesperson for oakland unified school district. i can confirm classes will resume and they have put a permanent cap on the source of the leak that started as an evacuation ended up being classes cancelled for the day. now, we know school officials

are investigating whether or not students may have played a role in releasing that gas valve. this hurried, jumbled mess not caused bit last class bell, it's students of skyline rushing to leave the school. >> alarm went off. they smelled gas around the 50 building not too far from our classroom. >> reporter: it started because of a cold classroom. >> they asked building maintenance to turn on the heat. that is what happened. something was wrong. >> reporter: something was very wrong. crews smelled gas. pg&e called to locate the source the campus safety protocol put into action the school was evacuated with everybody ordered to the football field while oakland fire and fg and e investigated. the leak came from a valve according to officials in an old science room

the school is investigating if someone turned it on, possibly a student. oakland unified school district building and ground crews are responsible for the line. >> i want to know if this is healthy for not. >> they need to get this fixed. >> reporter: not enough buses. >> keep it calm, orderly, please. >> available to take everyone needing a ride away. >> we need to find operators aren't on routes already. >> reporter: this is the second gas leak in as many weeks a contractor last week hit a gas line, forcing a cancellation of classes after the president's day holiday weekend. in oakland, nick smith, abc7 news >> a napa couple pleaded not guilty to charges they beat the woman's 3-year-old daughter to

death. sarah krueger and her boyfriend ryan warner arrested in a bart station in el cerrito. prosecutors concluded the girl died of multiple blunt impact injuries due to child abuse and neglect. she was found dead during a welfare check. >> asiana airlines will play a penalty for how it responded to the crash at sfo that killed three people in july the u.s. department of transportation says the airline failed in three important ways after the crash. first took asiana 18 hours to set up a hot line for family members of victims. second, asiana took five days to contact families of all 291 passengers. and third, the airline did not sufficiently implement it's family assistance plant,

requiring attention to passengers' families. asiana says they have provided support and will continue to do so. >> caltrans is hoping rain will lead clues into leaking bolts on the new bay bridge. caltrans says 30% of the 2600 small bolts appear to be leaking. investigators are still trying to figure out why. caltrans says it's anticipating those little trickles but one consultant suggests it's time for a new independent review of the eastern span. >> i have seen enough over the last two years to say we should pull back and look at the whole thing, again. >> the bolts are tached to steel plates, caltrans admits standing water found inside of the steel structure could lead to rust and corrosion, but they say it does not pose long term risks. >> we're expecting rain in the

scene about 12:15 calling for a second alarm to try to keep flames from spreading. a large explosion rattled this neighborhood. >> we heard a boom the house in the back engulfed in flames. >> firefighters found a person dead six feet from the front door. an arson task force is trying to figure out what started this fire and how the victim died. a family member of the people in the front house say a middle age in man in his 40s lived alone in the small home in the back of the property. >> him and his cats yeah. so that was his way of life. feeding his pythons and cats. >> joesa yeah was relieved to find out his daughter escaped unharmed. >> i just hugged her and said thank god you're okay. >> i spoke with the medical

these forecast features wind and rain arriving tomorrow morning. a chance of thunderstorms tomorrow night. showers thursday, more rain on friday. so, nice series of wet, rainy days rain developing upon coastal areas of north bay. by 8:00 a.m we can see a break for much of the bay area, next wave of strong down pours will arrive. no doubt will be hazardous driving conditions for late afternoon and evening commute the rain continues overnight into thursday morning give waying to showerst( on thursday morning. it's going to be a wet day thursday as well. winds gusty but strongest gunts about 2:00 mainly on the coastline.
